Challenge
Wendy’s senior management wanted to honor Founder Dave Thomas with a full-size bronze statue at the Flagship restaurant that was being constructed. It normally takes one to two years to complete a statue like this, but in order to unveil it at the grand opening, it needed to be completed in six months.
This presented several challenges, such as selection of the sculptor and managing the process, engineering and construction deadlines, and managing expectations of senior management and the Thomas family.
Elements of the project included:
Each critical deadline and milestone was met to keep the sculpture project moving forward, from approving the initial clay maquette to traveling to the artist’s studio to approve the full-size clay, to the installation and unveiling.
Result
The statue, which was installed on the outside patio, is a focal point of the restaurant. The Thomas Family approved of the statue and appreciated the gesture to memorialize their husband and father. The project came in on time and under budget.

- Selection of a steering committee of key decision-makers from the company, representatives from the Dublin arts community, and the Thomas family
- Management of the RFP for sculptors, reviewing the proposals with the committee and making a recommendation to senior management
- Gaining senior leadership approval and budget ($90,000)
- Securing digital resources for the artist’s reference
- Overseeing the installation of the statue
